REMINDER: Illinois - Law Changes for Rest and Meal Period Effective January 1, 2023

The new law requires every employee who works any consecutive 7-day period to be provided with at least 24 consecutive hours of rest.  Previously, this applied to a calendar week instead of any consecutive 7-day period.

In addition, Employers must also allow a 20-minute period for meals after an employee has worked seven and half hours and an additional 20-minute mealtime for every four and half hours worked beyond the initial seven and half hours.  Reasonable rest room breaks are in addition to the 20-minute meal break.

Notice of this law must be posted or employees notified by email or mentioned on the company website when the law takes effect January 1, 2023.
